Residents say thank you with a celebration meal

"Everyone is very happy with how Vrudha Nivas now looks. We feel emh homes must really value us. Relatives and friends who have visited say it looks so bright now they have started calling it the White House!"

Residents of a sheltered housing scheme for elderly Asian people in Loughborough were so impressed with their new kitchen that they cooked a celebration meal for support staff and contractors.

The renovation of the reception and communal areas of the building in Rendell Street is part of a proactive approach by social housing provider emh homes to the modernisation of its older stock.

The building was starting to show its age, which was affecting the letting of vacant flats, but the refreshed frontage has provoked fresh interest in the scheme and it is hoped that vacancies will soon be filled.

The building work was completed in just four weeks, with each of the contractors showing great generosity by each giving something extra to the scheme:

  • Walter Moss, who carried out the main building work, also gifted a double oven, a five ring gas hob, and an extractor fan
  • Independent Testing Company donated LED light fittings and associated  electrical works within the communal room
  • HBS Doors provided a lockable notice board and two leaflet holders in the reception area
  • T&S Heating gave three new radiators and connected the gas hob within the kitchen
  • Carpet Cuts donated the vinyl flooring within the kitchen area
  • Kirby Pro Seal gifted an electric fire within the communal room
  • Stealth Scaffolding gave the residents a 50 inch plasma TV

Mrs Shantaben Patel, who cooked the meal with her friend and fellow resident Mrs Padmaben Patel, said: “Everyone is very happy with how Vrudha Nivas now looks. We feel emh homes must really value us.
