Pupils at a primary school in Leicestershire have benefitted from the donation of computer equipment by emh group, the Coalville-based social housing and care organisation.

The equipment includes laptops and tablets, and will be used to support the provision of digital learning and enable the children attending the Out of Hours Club to take part with other schools in a digital media project. The pupils will be using the tablets, along with apps and a mini-microscope, to help bring their ideas to life in creating a short stop-animation film designed to enrich play experiences both in and out of school.

Chan Kataria, Chief Executive of emh group, paid a visit to Ellistown Primary School recently to see what the pupils had been using the equipment for. Out of Hours Manager Kelly Freeman and two pupils, Daniel (10) and William (8), were more than happy to demonstrate how the children were making the film. Starting with storyboarding, with as many pupils as possible drawing scenes from the film, the children then moved on to creating the scenery and backdrops using papier mache and projectors. Various Lego figures will then be used as the characters to populate the story.

“It is remarkable to see the skill that these children already have with digital technology,” said Chan Kataria. “We always like to support our local communities, so it is heartwarming to see our equipment put to such fantastic use.”

Twice a year the ICT department at emh group carries out an audit of all its IT equipment, and in previous years any identified as no longer suitable for business use would be disposed of through an IT support contract. Recently, however, the organisation has decided to donate the equipment to worthy causes. As well as local schools, equipment has also been donated to care organisations in the area.
